You should be hanging off the top knee as much, if not more, then you are propping yourself up with the bottom knee. To prep, get comfy with knee hang holds, like the cupid and side climb. You are using the heel of the bottom foot to press the top knee closed. Then push the hips forward to lock in to the pose. The more you can get your hips forward, the more your feet can be brought close to your butt, and the more secure the knees will be.
